Honest review in exchange of a copy of the book.

*Spoiler Alert*

A few months back I had read and reviewed The Sound of DiamondsRachelle Rea Cobb‘s first book from ‘The Steadfast Love’ Series and had found it compelling. I was moved after reading it and was eager to know the future events in line for the protagonists and how those would shape their lives.

ABOUT The Sound of Silver

The stalwart saint and the redeemed rebel. One fights for faith, the other for honor…

After Dirk rescues Gwyneth from the Iconoclastic Fury, she discovers that faith is sometimes fragile—and hope is not as easy as it may seem. Gwyneth continues her quest to learn more about the love of God preached by Protestants she once distrusted.

Meanwhile, Dirk’s quest is to prevent his sullied name from staining hers. Will his choice to protect her prove the undoing of her first faltering steps toward a Father God? Once separated, will Dirk and Gwyneth’s searching hearts ever sing the same song?

My take on The Sound of Silver

I was very much taken with Dirk (Devon Godfrey) And Gwyn’s (Gwyneth Barrington) love and their story after I had finished with ‘The Sound of Diamonds’ and indeed did not know what to expect. I was happy and excited that they had found each other and recognised the love they held for each other; at the same time I was wary of the hinted mistake that was to take place and kept my fingers crossed hoping that no sorrow or despair befalls them.

It started on a happy note. We are led through all events that have transpired as the story had halted in the final pages of TSoD, and had led to this particular situation where we find ourselves in the current phase of the story.

Dirk and Gwyn are betrothed and happy. Soon as the elation calms down, realisation starts setting in and Dirk understands himself to be completely unworthy of Gwyn’s love and a potential danger to her life and wellbeing.

And then, that which I feared, happens. He decides to take her to safety, under his mother’s kind watch at Godfrey Estate, and resume his life in exile. Giving up his only chance to happiness and denying himself and Gwyn the satisfaction of their togetherness, he sets off again to keep his love and his family safe.

Gwyn is completely shattered and so is Dirk. Both face the toughest and most challenging time of their lives.

And believe me, I was affected. It took me an unusually long time to read the book, because the events that occurred in their lives indeed had an affect on mine and I was saddened and didn’t feel like moving ahead, I was so involved in the sorrow. Gwyn’s struggles are heart breaking and Dirk suffers with his own grief.

The time apart, I believe, gave them perspective and also the sense of the other’s worth. It tested their hopes and faith in God.

After suffering for months and longing for each other, they do unite eventually, and what a reunion it is. Together, Dirk and Gwyn are ethereal. Their belongingness is evident through the minutest of gestures. Hesitant happiness turns to unfathomed joy when Gwyn comes to understand that Dirk intends never to leave her again.

The introduction of Lady Godfrey was a welcome addition to the story, along with Susan. The entry of Anders Revelin, Gwyn’s childhood friend and no well wisher of Dirk, was another aspect in the story. Further, here in TSoS, Cade and Margried face their own challenges and are drifting apart despite their love for one another. Ian’s story from his past is made known, and is touching.

Overall, this instalment of ‘The Steadfast Love’ Series was balanced in characters’ story development, while also being a little slow paced in the middle. While TSoD focused on Gwyn’s background, or rather is set in her world, TSoS is set in what is Dirk’s world. His house, his family and their way of life.

I would surely recommend this to anyone keen on reading good, clean historical fiction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Times gone by snatch Rachelle Rea Cobb close, so she reads and writes about years long ago–her passions include the Reformation, Revolutions, and romance. Rachelle wrote the Steadfast Love series during college. Five months after she graduated, she signed a three-book deal with her dream publisher, WhiteFire. She’s a homeschool grad, Oreo addict, and plots her novels while driving around her dream car, a pick-up truck. In June 2016, she married a man with the same name as her fictional hero, and they live happily ever after in Small Town, South.

Rachelle is a splendid writer and a newlywed! This summer, she married a man with the same first name as the hero of the series!

She really has a skill with the pen, and uses language beautifully to express. The period details are accurate and actually brushed my knowledge a bit!
And it goes without saying that I am keen on getting hands on the author’s next works for sure!

Thank you for this beautiful review, Seema! I’m so glad you hung with Dirk and Gwyn, even when it became hard to go on (I had similar moments while writing this installment of their story). I so appreciate your support! 🙂
